Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
