Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Police then located multiple other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident made him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
